Maria Guzman’s Story

This week, as part of our “live” series, I’m excited to share the inspiring story of Maria Guzman, a woman and mother whose life is being transformed through the support of Margaret’s House. Maria’s story reminds us of the power of community and the hope that comes with something as simple as a safe place to call home.

Maria’s story began in a place of uncertainty. For three days, she was homeless, moving between hotels that drained her resources and left her worried about her children’s safety. “I was staying in hotels before coming to KCB,” Maria told Amanda, our Executive Director’s wife, during their interview. It was a friend from church who pointed her toward Kingdom Causes Bellflower, and with a mix of hope and hesitation, Maria made the call that would eventually change everything.

When Maria walked into our office, she felt an immediate sense of relief. “Since the moment I walked into KCB, I felt safe,” she shared. “Everyone at the office was so caring and helpful.” That warmth and support are at the heart of what we do here, and it wasn’t long before we offered Maria and her children a place at Margaret’s House, our hospitality home for families transitioning out of homelessness. For Maria, that moment was a turning point. “The moment we were offered a place to stay was a great impact for me,” she said.

Life at Margaret’s House has given Maria and her kids a chance to breathe and rebuild. The home itself is a warm, welcoming space where families can cook together or let their kids play safely in play areas. Maria’s eyes light up when she talks about the simple joys of family dinners and safe conversations. These moments, she says, are what make the house feel like a home. “It made a huge difference to have a safe place to sleep and shelter for my children and I,” Maria explained. “Not being in the streets with all the dangers.”

Beyond the walls of Margaret’s House, Maria has found a community. The MH team provides daily support, from food donations to regular check-ins with her case manager. “I receive support every day from the KCB support team,” Maria said. “Food donation is one of the greatest helps we get.” She’s also formed bonds with other families at Margaret’s House, sharing tips and encouragement as they navigate their journeys together.

Maria’s strength shines through, even on tough days. Amanda, who interviewed her, noted that Maria works hard, learns quickly, always puts her kids first, and she’s not one to ask for help easily (she’d rather carry the burden herself than inconvenience others). Yet, she’s open about the challenges, like the frustration of how long it’s taking to find long-term housing. “It’s been discouraging at times,” she admitted, but her faith keeps her grounded. Maria prays daily, trusting that a path forward will open soon.

What keeps Maria going is the time she gets to spend with her family. Those moments are her biggest victories. “Spending quality time with my kids and mom,” she said, is her greatest success. It’s a reminder that the word “live” isn’t just about having a place to stay; it’s about having space to connect, grow, and feel like you belong. As Maria beautifully put it, “To me, having a place to live means security, stability, safety, and feeling like I belong. It also gives me a sense of identity and well-being.”

Maria’s gratitude for our staff, especially Andrew and Amanda San Nicolas, runs deep. “Since day one, they have been so supportive, caring, comforting, and a blessing to us,” she said. “They cheer me up when I feel like I’m not doing things right. Always so positive.” Their encouragement has helped Maria see her own resilience, even when she doubts herself.

Looking ahead, Maria dreams of giving back. “This experience has made me hope to one day be able to help in any way possible,” she shared. “To volunteer and be able to donate my time and necessities.” Her time at KCB has taught her valuable lessons, which she’s eager to pass on. “The lessons I would share with others is to not give up,” she said. “To look for help. There is always help. Things will get better no matter what it may look like at the moment.”

To our donors and partners, Maria has a heartfelt message: “I would say thank you! That their donations work. Assistance and resources have saved many people and have given us a feeling of hope during our hardships. They are so appreciated, and God bless them with much more.”

Her words are a testament to the impact your support has on families like hers, and why programs like Margaret’s House matter. “I would bring up the importance of having a shelter and a safe place to stay,” she said. “The importance of not only getting housing assistance, but also emotional support and feeling that there’s a community that cares for us.” Here at KCB, we’re committed to making sure every neighbor has a place to live, and we couldn’t do it without your help.
