Stories Week: Service
Live. Work. Belong. That’s our mission here at KCB, and embedded into the fabric of these weeks of straining for our neighbors, we find stories that support those pillars. In October, we had two events that brought together both volunteers and community members here in the community center, and we’re excited to share about them. A local church (Arbor Road) reached out to us regarding their “Love Our City Day,” and what transpired ended up bringing new energy and transformation to both the KCB Community Center, which serves our homeless neighbors, and Margaret’s House, which is used as transitional housing for families.
Volunteers poured their time and talent into refreshing and renewing our spaces. At the KCB Community Center, the team revitalized the atmosphere by repairing and painting pillars, doorways, and walls, including color highlights that reflect our logo. This new look creates a more inviting environment for neighbors, and they’ve sure been sure to let us know that they like what the community center is turning in to!
At Margaret’s House, another team focused on a project for the younger residents in our community. Volunteers painted and prepped two garden planters to join the three already in use. These garden beds aren’t just places for planting—they’re spaces for children to play in the dirt, plant seeds, and learn about nurturing life, so it was such a blessing to add more to that vision!
On October 16th, over 25 sixth graders from Lakewood Christian School visited KCB as part of their service learning as well. They assembled hygiene kits for our neighbors, carefully filling each bag with essential items that can make a real difference in daily life. Beyond this hands-on service, the students also met and spoke with members of our Lived Experience Advisory Board (LEAB)—individuals who were once homeless and, with KCB’s support, secured and maintained housing. These conversations offered the students a unique perspective on hope and the real-life impact of community support. Hearing directly from those who have experienced homelessness and successfully rebuilt their lives was an eye-opening experience, and helped them see the impact that serving others with compassion does for people.
A special thank you goes out to both Arbor Road Church and Lakewood Christian School. Their efforts have not only refreshed our spaces and supported our mission but also strengthened the spirit of belonging that unites our community. Together, we continue to build a place where everyone matters, and where everybody belongs. Check out the video below, and our Instagram (@kcbellflower) for more pictures!
