Alicia’s Story

Alicia walked into the KCB Community Center on a Thursday morning for Bible study, searching for more than just encouragement, she was searching for hope. As a recovering addict living in a halfway house through Little House, Alicia was facing an uphill battle. Court mandates required her to find stable employment, have a vehicle, and find suitable housing before she could regain custody of her son, who has a disability. The weight of these requirements was heavy, and with methadone treatment making job searches even harder, she felt trapped.

But then, a door opened.

When we heard her story, we referred her to Good Soil and through GSI, she found an opportunity that not only worked with her treatment schedule but also provided her with a supportive environment to take steps toward actual employment. For the first time in a long time, she saw a real path forward. She was able to secure a position with our GSI team and from there, her journey started.

The turning point came when she landed her first job interview. With the guidance she received through KCB and GSI, she walked into that interview prepared, confident, and ready to prove herself. And she did. She became a top candidate for the position, showing her that putting in the work and having self-belief can make all the difference.

Stable employment changed everything for Alicia. It wasn’t just about having a job, it was about regaining control of her future. She got her driver’s license, a huge milestone in her journey, and got CPR, First Aid, and AED certified, getting herself in position for a career as a home caregiver. Through the American Job Center of California (AJCC), she even received additional certifications that would help her take the next step in her career.

For Alicia, this wasn’t just about work, it was about her son. For so long, she had seen the possibility of holding him again slowly slipping away. No one was giving her a chance, and every rejection felt like another closed door between her and the life she wanted to rebuild. But through the support of KCB, GSI, and Rio Hondo, those doors started opening.

Now, Alicia sees her future a little differently. She knows that hard work, hope, and perseverance can rewrite her story. She’s on track to meet the court’s requirements, and more importantly, she’s closer than ever to holding her son in her arms again.

Her journey isn’t over, but it’s no longer defined by her past. Instead, it’s marked by progress, and the belief that anything is possible.

Please join us in praying for her story to continue on the path towards her son, and for Alicia to keep going, no matter what life tries to do to knock her off course.

To Alicia’s son, mom’s on her way! And she’s almost home.
