Journey of Transformation: Gene’s Story

In the heart of Bellflower, a beacon of hope and transformation shines brightly through the efforts of Kingdom Causes Bellflower (KCB) and its social enterprise, Good Soil Industries (GSI). One of the coolest stories to emerge from this community is that of Gene, who transitioned from a life of addiction and homelessness to becoming the director of GSI, where he now leads others on a path to recovery and purpose.

A Life Transformed

Gene’s journey is nothing short of miraculous. He recalls his past with a raw honesty that speaks volumes about his strength and resilience. "I was a drug addict for 30 years," Gene shares, "and I spent over a decade homeless, with a stint in prison." His turning point came through a rehab program where he first encountered Good Soil Industries. It was through this connection that he found a new sense of purpose and a place where he truly belonged.

Before joining GSI, Gene faced seemingly insurmountable challenges. "I had no job, and after getting out of rehab, I needed a fresh start," he reflects. "GSI gave me that purpose and the mentorship I desperately needed." This program not only provided Gene with employment but also with the support system to help him rebuild his life from the ground up.

Rising Through the Ranks

Gene's journey with GSI began as a participant, where he worked diligently to turn his life around. His hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed. "I started as a participant and within six months, I became a Route Manager. After two years, I was promoted to Lead Route Manager, a position I held for seven years. When I knew I was being considered to be the director, I felt a mix of nervousness and excitement, but I knew I could do it," he says.

His progression through these roles was not just a personal triumph but also a testament to the transformative power of Good Soil Industries. Gene’s lived experience allows him to connect deeply with current participants. "I know where they're coming from because I've been there," he explains. This empathy fuels his passion for leading the organization and helping others achieve their own breakthroughs.

One of the most memorable moments for Gene was receiving his first paycheck after many years. "It felt incredible to know I earned it, and I saved every penny," he recalls. This simple act of earning and saving money marked a significant milestone in his journey toward self-reliance and dignity.

As the director of GSI, Gene has implemented several key changes to enhance the program's impact. "I’ve introduced more structure and a focus on meeting participants where they’re at," he says. Sharing his personal story and experiences has also become a powerful tool for inspiring others. "My story is a testament to the power of second chances," Gene adds, emphasizing that everyone deserves the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Gene is deeply committed to the mission of Good Soil Industries: helping those who are "hard to hire" find employment and work their way out of poverty. "This program saved my life," he states plainly. Looking ahead, Gene envisions an expansion that leads to a self-sustaining operation. "We need more contracts and customers to support our program, and we're actively working towards that," he explains.

Success for Gene is measured by the tangible changes in participants' lives. "When they secure full-time employment, find housing, and maintain their jobs, that’s success," he asserts. Despite the challenges, including the need for more contracts to fund the program, Gene remains hopeful and determined to push forward.

Gene’s leadership philosophy is grounded in leading by example. "I don’t ask participants to do anything I wouldn’t do myself," he says. He motivates his team by being an open ear and sharing his personal journey, emphasizing the importance of positive reactions to life's challenges. "Our old ways don’t serve us anymore," he reminds them.

The engagement with the local community is crucial for GSI. "We serve this community, so being involved with service clubs, city councils, and individuals is vital," Gene notes. This involvement has built trust and partnerships that are essential to GSI’s success.

One of the most heartwarming success stories from GSI is that of David, a former participant who had spent 22 years in prison. "He went through our program twice," Gene recalls. "Despite relapsing and facing significant personal challenges, David reconnected with us, completed the program again, and is now a supervisor at LAX." Stories like David's highlight the transformative impact of GSI and the power of perseverance.

A Message of Hope

Gene’s advice to anyone looking to make a positive change in their life is simple yet profound: "Set small, attainable goals and be open to new opportunities. There's so much out there, and God is always with you." His personal commitment to helping others is fueled by the profound changes he has experienced in his own life.

Looking to the future, Gene is excited about implementing more devotional activities at GSI. "Without knowing God and having faith, we have nothing," he believes. This spiritual foundation is at the core of everything GSI stands for, as it aims to sow seeds of hope and transformation.

Gene’s story is a powerful testament to the mission of Kingdom Causes Bellflower and Good Soil Industries. As Jason Barnette, a previous GSI Director and now Housing Programs Director who originally hired Gene, reflects, "Gene stood out because of his hard work and determination. He’s overcome so much and is now leading others who need to overcome similar challenges." I remember a there was a day where Gene caught a thorn in his hand while he was working, and he just put duct tape on it and kept going! I knew he would be one that would make an impact.” From riding a bike for hours just to get to work to saving enough money for his first car, Gene embodies the spirit of resilience and transformation.

Gene’s journey from a life of addiction and homelessness to becoming a leader and beacon of hope for others is truly inspiring. It reminds us all of the power of second chances and the impact of organizations like Kingdom Causes Bellflower and Good Soil Industries in transforming lives and building stronger communities. We at KCB are immensely proud of Gene, whose story continues to inspire and uplift so many others.
